Physiotherapy Graduate Laments Lack of Internship Slots, Calls for Reform

A recent graduate of physiotherapy, identified as Bella, has expressed frustration over the difficulty many healthcare graduates face in securing internship placements after completing their studies.

In a video circulating online, Bella described the situation as discouraging for young professionals who have spent years studying but struggle to move forward in their careers due to limited internship opportunities.

According to her, medical and allied health graduates often complete up to six years of education only to spend additional years searching for hospitals where they can complete their mandatory internship training.

Bella alleged that gaining placement in some accredited hospitals is often influenced by connections or the ability to pay for limited slots, leaving many qualified graduates without opportunities.

“If you do not have money to buy slots, if your parents are not rich, or you don’t know someone influential in these accredited hospitals, you may not get an internship,” she said.

She added that the situation has left many graduates stranded after school. Bella cited the example of a friend who graduated four years ago but has yet to secure an internship placement.

The physiotherapy graduate also noted that without completing the internship, graduates cannot proceed to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, further delaying their professional progress.

Calling on relevant authorities to intervene, Bella appealed for a more transparent and accessible system that allows healthcare graduates to easily apply and obtain internship placements after school.

“This is a cry for help. It is not funny. You finish school and without this internship, you cannot serve,” she said.

Bella urged regulatory bodies and healthcare institutions to take steps to support physiotherapy students and other healthcare graduates facing similar challenges.
