For years, Abioye Tosin Lawrence has built a reputation documenting events, holding public institutions accountable, and telling the stories of others through Oriontimes Online Newspaper. Lawrence’s journey into authorship did not begin in a newsroom but during a memorable trip to The Gambia, where a single evening would reshape his perspective on storytelling.

While attending a cultural concert at the Officers’ Mess in Brufut, he immersed himself in an atmosphere filled with psychedelic music, cultural performances, and artistic expression. Gambian actress and performer Mariam Jobe headlined the event alongside several local artists who entertained the audience with songs performed in the Mandinka language.

Although he could not understand the language, Lawrence carefully documented every detail of the performance, observing the emotional connection between the audience and the performers. European musicians accompanied the concert with guitar performances, adding to an atmosphere that transcended linguistic barriers.

The event also introduced him to people who would leave a lasting impression on his writing journey. Among them was Gambian poet Abdul Komma, author of The Blind Bridges of Love, with whom Lawrence exchanged contacts.

The following day, he accepted an invitation from Monica Buchanan, an American retiree and accomplished author who was vacationing in The Gambia. During their conversation, Buchanan encouraged him to look beyond reporting the lives of others.

Her advice was simple yet profound: “You need to start writing your own story.”

That conversation remained with Lawrence long after he returned to Nigeria.

Inspired by the people he met and the experiences he gathered abroad, he broadened his editorial outlook and became increasingly determined to elevate his craft. The idea of documenting his own life’s journey gradually took shape, transforming years of personal struggles, resilience, and lived experiences into a memoir.

The result is Voices from the Fire: My Journey Through a Hollow Empire, a deeply personal account that chronicles Lawrence’s life from childhood through his professional journey, offering readers an intimate reflection on hardship, perseverance, leadership, and hope.
