After Years of Neglect, Okin Biscuits Factory Revival Promises Jobs, Industrial Boost – Babatunde Raji

News Update

A new chapter is about to begin for one of Nigeria’s most iconic manufacturing brands as the long-dormant Okin Biscuits Factory in Ijagbo, Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State, prepares to resume production after years of inactivity.

The planned revival has sparked excitement among residents, industry stakeholders and former employees who see the development as a major step toward restoring the state’s industrial strength, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

The factory’s return follows renewed efforts by the Kwara State Government in partnership with private investors to breathe life back into the once-thriving biscuit manufacturing company, which had remained shut for several years.

Okin Biscuits was founded in 1980 by the late Chief Emmanuel Olatunji Adesoye (1938–2017), the first qualified quantity surveyor in Northern Nigeria. Beyond his professional achievements, Adesoye was celebrated as an accomplished industrialist and philanthropist whose investment transformed Ijagbo into one of Nigeria’s notable manufacturing hubs.

For many years, Okin Biscuits ranked among the country’s most recognised biscuit brands, supplying products to households across Nigeria. However, a combination of operational difficulties, financial challenges and prolonged neglect eventually forced the factory to cease production.

The closure had a far-reaching impact on the local economy, leaving many residents unemployed while businesses that depended on the factory also struggled.

Information has it that rehabilitation of the facility has reached an advanced stage, with modern production equipment already being installed ahead of the planned restart of operations.

When production resumes, the revived factory is expected to generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, boost commercial activities in Ijagbo and neighbouring communities, and strengthen Kwara State’s industrial sector.

The announcement has been welcomed enthusiastically by residents, of Ijagbo, Offa, ilorin and the neighborhoods whom believe the reopening will restore economic opportunities that disappeared with the factory’s closure. Business owners are also optimistic that increased industrial activities will revive commerce within the nearby communities.

The return of Okin Biscuits could also encourage fresh investments in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector while supporting ongoing efforts to reduce dependence on imported consumer goods through increased local production.

While commending the Kwara State Government under the watch of AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for coming to the rescue of the dormant Okin Biscuits as part economic development strategy it is important to understand some facts that are mentioned as you read ahead.

It is obvious that the planned reopening represents an important milestone, industry observers believe the real challenge begins once production starts.

Nigeria’s biscuit market has certainly evolved significantly over the past two decades, with several established local and international manufacturers competing for market share. To succeed, Okin Biscuits will need to combine modern production technology, competitive pricing, effective nationwide distribution and consistent product quality to win back consumers.

For many Nigerians, the Okin brand evokes fond childhood memories. However, nostalgia alone may not guarantee commercial success in today’s highly competitive fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market.

Editor-in-Chief of Entrust Media, Babatunde Raji observes that although the revival of the factory marks a significant achievement for Kwara State’s industrial development, its long-term success will depend on whether the company can adapt to changing consumer preferences, maintain high production standards and compete effectively with leading brands.

As production draws closer, the question remains, it remains to be seen whether Okin Biscuits can transform its rich legacy into a successful comeback and once again become one of Nigeria’s favourite household brands, Only the market will provide the answer.
