A video circulating online obtained by this online newspaper shows the Imo State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Bernard Thompson Ikegwuoha, confronting a Reverend Father over the punishment of students who reportedly arrived late to school.

In the video, the Commissioner is seen questioning the priest for ordering the students to kneel as a form of punishment. He reiterated that corporal punishment has been abolished in schools across Imo State and maintained that such disciplinary measures are no longer permitted under the state’s education policy.

Prof. Ikegwuoha argued that the students should not have been subjected to the punishment and expressed his dissatisfaction with the school’s handling of the situation. He subsequently directed the school authorities to close the school for the day, noting that the date was a public holiday.
