Gunmen kill Osogbo man near recreation centre

Osun State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a man identified as Adejuwon Adekunle, popularly known as Asa, by suspected gunmen in Osogbo, the state capital.

Adekunle was reportedly attacked near a recreation centre in the Dele Yes Sir community during the early hours of Tuesday by yet-to-be-identified assailants.

The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying the victim was shot and subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.

Ojelabi said Adekunle was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, adding that his remains had been deposited at a morgue.

“What happened in Dele Yes Sir is suspected to be a cult-related attack. The incident occurred around 2am on Tuesday,” the police spokesperson said.

“We got information that some armed men went to the area and started shooting sporadically. One Adejuwon Adekunle, aka Asa, was shot and rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival,” he added.

According to reports, Adekunle was allegedly attacked between 1:30am and 2am after the assailants reportedly traced him to the area.

The circumstances surrounding the killing remained unclear as of the time of filing this report, while the identities and whereabouts of the suspected attackers were yet to be established.

Ojelabi said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zungura, had directed that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

“We have not made any arrest regarding the incident,” he said.

The police command said preliminary findings indicated that the incident might be cult-related, while assuring that an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding Adekunle’s death and identify those responsible.
