News Update
Phone snatchers have killed a nurse, Hadiza Musa, the Deputy Head of the Maternity Unit at Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Kofar Gayan, Zaria, during an attempt to snatch her mobile phone.
The deceased was attacked while returning from work on Saturday.
Confirming the incident, her husband, Hamza Ibrahim Idris, who works in Abuja, explained that on Saturday, she called to tell him she was going to the salon to make her hair and would also visit an Islamic chemist in Filin Mallawa, Tudun Wada, Zaria, which he approved.
He said their last conversation was around 6 p.m. that same day, after she left the chemist and he transferred some money to her. Afterwards, he could no longer reach her on the phone.
According to him, “I kept calling her line until the following morning when I concluded that her phone battery must have run down.”
After regaining consciousness following the tragic incident on Tuesday, Idris said he later learned that his wife had boarded a commercial motorcycle around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, on her way home, when she was attacked by hoodlums who attempted to snatch her phone.
He explained that there were signs her hands had been squeezed, indicating she struggled to hold onto the phone. He added that she was hit hard on the head, as there were visible injuries and bleeding, which he believes caused her death.
According to Idris, “After she slipped into a coma, they snatched the phone and dumped her by the roadside along Mallawa Eid Ground in Tudun Wada, Zaria. A good Samaritan found her and rushed her to a clinic, from where she was referred to ABU Teaching Hospital, Shika, where she was confirmed dead.”
He further explained that his wife’s death came just three months after the passing of her sister, whose three children she had adopted. She is survived by her three biological children and the three adopted ones.
Abdulkadir Balele Wali, the Hospital Secretary, also confirmed the incident, explaining that Hadiza was the Deputy Head of the Maternity Unit and was on duty until late Friday evening.
He described her as a professional, hardworking, and dedicated health worker who committed her life to saving others, adding that her death is a great loss to the entire hospital.
Efforts to reach the spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, Mansur Hassan, for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
