NANS Zone D Condemns NFSAN’s Comment On Sexual Harassment Cases In Institutions

News Update

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, under the leadership of the Coordinator, Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, hereby issues this counter press release in response to the recent press conference convened by the National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN) led by Lady Comrade Choice Uche-Nna Enebele, titled “Press Release by the National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN) on the Lack of Accountability in Sexual Harassment Cases in Our Tertiary Institutions, Especially the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State.”

We recognize the importance of addressing sexual harassment in Nigerian tertiary institutions, and it is with this focus that we believe in promoting a balanced and fair process for all cases that require attention. However, we strongly condemn the hasty and unfounded statements made by NFSAN in their press release, which makes baseless allegations and calls for the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fashina.

In light of this, we wish to state the following:

1. Support for Due Process: We emphasize that the University Governing Council of FUOYE has already constituted an investigative committee to thoroughly examine the allegations of sexual harassment within the institution. As responsible students, we stand by the principle of due process and believe that this committee should be allowed to perform its duties without external interference or undue pressure. Any call to suspend the Vice-Chancellor prematurely is not only unjust but goes against the spirit of fairness and due process.

2. Condemnation of Malicious Intent:* It is evident that the press release by NFSAN carries malicious intent. The use of such a sensitive issue to discredit the integrity of the leadership of FUOYE is concerning. NFSAN’s actions appear to be driven by ulterior motives that are not rooted in the pursuit of justice but rather in a misguided attempt to stir conflict. The politicization of such serious matters is counterproductive and disruptive to the progress of Nigerian students.

3. Solidarity with FUOYE Leadership: NANS Southwest stands in full support of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fashina, and the University Governing Council. We trust in their ability to handle this matter with the seriousness it deserves, ensuring that all allegations are investigated thoroughly and justly. The call for the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor, without due process, is baseless, and we reject such actions that seek to undermine the leadership of the institution.

4. Commitment to Justice and Accountability: NANS Southwest Zone D is fully committed to fighting for the rights of all students and ensuring that any form of sexual harassment is thoroughly addressed. We advocate for justice through proper channels and established processes. We will not tolerate any attempt to destabilize institutions or disrupt their leadership through reckless, politically motivated statements.

In conclusion, we call on NFSAN and other stakeholders to allow the University Governing Council and its investigative committee to complete their work. We also urge the public to disregard the unfounded allegations made in the NFSAN press release and support the ongoing efforts to address the issue of sexual harassment in our institutions.

We remain committed to ensuring that Nigerian students thrive in a safe and conducive environment, and we will continue to advocate for justice, transparency, and fairness at all levels.
