Three shot dead as protests rock Enugu over sit-at-home

At least three persons have lost their lives during a public demonstration in Nigeria’s South East state of Enugu.

Tension heightened and frustration boiled over following the state government decision to go after business owners who adhered to the sit-at-home order by a splinter Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) group.

Recall that the governor of the state, Peter Mbah, had said those, especially business owners, who observe the sit-at-home will be punished.

It’s gathered that traders took to the streets on Wednesday morning in the Coal City metropolis protesting the sealing of their shops by the State government for not opening for business on Monday.

However, the event took an ugly turn as the protest reportedly became violent leading to the shooting of three persons dead.

Video clips show lifeless bodies of two young men and that of a lady.

Security forces were said to have been deployed to disperse the protesters. It is, however, unclear who fired the shots.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe promised to soon make available what he knew about the reported incident.
