Alleged assault: Manchester United suspends Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood has been suspended indefinitely, Manchester United announced in a statement Sunday, after the 20-year-old striker faced allegations of sexual and physical abuse.

In since-deleted posts on Instagram, Greenwood’s girlfriend alleged the Manchester United forward abused her and included graphic images of injuries that she says were caused by Greenwood. In an audio clip, Greenwood can purportedly be heard demanding sex from his unwilling girlfriend.

“We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media,” Manchester United said in a statement Sunday, via ESPN. “We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

Greater Manchester Police also said in a statement that they are aware of the images and videos.

Greenwood joined Manchester United at age 6 in the club’s development school. After climbing through the ranks in his youth career, Greenwood made his senior debut in July 2018. In 83 career appearances with the club at the senior level, Greenwood has scored 22 goals.

In February 2021, Greenwood signed a four-year deal to stay with Manchester United until June 2025.
