Nigerian footballer faces sanction over ‘God is the Greatest’ celebration

Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi could face disciplinary action from the English Football Association over his goal celebration during Forest’s 3-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Awoniyi came off the bench to score Forest’s third goal, sealing a dominant victory as they fight to avoid relegation.

The 28-year-old received an automatic yellow card for taking off his shirt, but further sanctions could follow after he revealed a religious slogan bearing the words “God is the greatest” as he celebrated.

Under Law 4 of the International Football Association Board, players are prohibited from displaying political, religious or personal messages.

“Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo,” the regulation stated.

“For any offence the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by FIFA.”
