Schools resumption: Ondo announces recruitment of new Teachers

The Ondo state government has disclosed plans to recruit additional teachers in its public schools to fill the gap of shortage of teachers being experienced in the sector.

The permanent secretary in the ministry of education and science technology, Mrs Lola Amuda disclosed this at a forum in Akure, the state capital.

The state government had last year employed 1,000 teachers under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) but the sector is still being faced with the inadequate teachers to take relevant subjects in secondary schools across the state.

Mrs Amuda said: “We are quite aware of shortage of teachers in some critical subjects in our schools and we have made case to Mr governor and we are hopeful that this year, there will be some definite steps that will be taken to address this.

“As we know that last year, the government recruited 1,200 into the public schools across the state. We are also hopeful that this year, there will be such recruitment to fill the gaps in all public secondary schools across the state.

“It may not be a mass recruitment but at least recruitments into critical subject areas.

“We will also note the request that PTA teachers be considered for employment when the time comes. It is not going to be a secretive exercise. It is going to be made public and once it is made public, they should apply because it can not be automatic for them. The PTA teachers will also go through the requirement process.”

On the directive of governor Akeredolu that vice principals should return to classrooms, Mrs Amuda said the ministry would soon issue circular to that effect.

She said: “ On the need to send out circulars on the involvement of vice principals to teach ,that we intend to do at the ministry level.

“Circular is already being prepared and by Monday when schools resume, the copies of the circular will be available for the vice principals.

“Not only the vice principals, it also cut across the primary schools. All assistant head teachers have been mandated to teach. So it is no longer business as usual.

“We have so many of them, after taking the positions, they will just sit down without contributing any meaningful contributions to the system.”
