The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has disconnected all the accounts belonging to the Niger State Government.
Aminu Ubandoma, Legal officer of AEDC told the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in Minna on Thursday.
Ubandoma said that the disconnection became necessary because of the inability of the state government to settle its outstanding debts of N1.1 billion debt.
âWe donât have any option than to go and disconnects all the accounts belonging to the state government throughout the state.
The Government House, Ministries, Departments and Agencies were disconnected over accumulated unpaid electricity bills of N1.3 billion in September.
But the state government had released N200 million in September while promising to be paying N100 million to settle the debts.
The legal officer said that the state government failed to meet it obligations of paying N100m monthly.
He, however, said that the state government is up to date in the payments of its current monthly bills of about N75 million.
âWe took the action after being pushed to the wall by the state government for not keeping its words after the intervention of the state Assembly four months ago,â Ubandoma said.
He said that the company would only restore power supply to government accounts on the payments of N500 million.
âWe donât have any option than to disconnect their services and concentrate on our teaming loyal consumers in and outside the metropolis,â he said.
When contacted, the Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Matane, said the state government only promised to settle the debts if the financial position of the state government improved.
âThis debt you are talking about, we inherited it from the previous administrations and since government is a continuous process, we will settle it when the financial position of the state government improves.
âWe have invested over N13 billion on the procurements of assorted facilities for the AEDC to perform optimally.
âThe company should have commended the state government for its useful contribution towards its growth rather than embarking on mass disconnections of government accounts,â he said.
He, however, warned the management of AEDC against disconnecting water board, hospitals as government would not tolerate such action.
âWe will not tolerate any act of tampering with power supply to such important sector as the state government had invested so much to ensure uninterrupted water supply and effective health care delivery. CONTINUE READING…………………………
