Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has successfully overcome the crisis of leadership that threatened its survival.
Speaking to the delegates at the party’s national convention on Sunday in Abuja, Wike said loyal members “fought and returned the party to its rightful owners”.
The minister described the gathering as a turning point for the PDP after a prolonged period of internal division and defections.
He noted that the party’s grassroots members had been stabilising the party during the crisis, adding that despite “the infidelity of opportunistic elite,” rank-and-file supporters have remained committed.
“Together we fought against proponents of ethnic and geographic divisions; we trounced the naysayers who abandoned the core values upon which the party was built and, in the process, arrested the party from the vice grip of those who abhor internal democracy and shun adherence to the rule of law,” Wike said.
“More importantly, we fought and returned the party to its rightful owners, the people, an accomplishment which speaks to the fundamental principle upon which the party was erected.”
The minister noted that the PDP’s recovery must now translate into structural and ideological renewal while calling for the party’s unity.
He urged members to be more committed to transparency and create legitimate channels for grassroots participation and decision-making.
