A 31-year-old Nigerian woman has reportedly been deported less than 24 hours after arriving abroad, after selling her belongings and raising about ₦5.5 million in a desperate attempt to relocate for a better life.
According to a viral social media post, the woman was earning ₦45,000 monthly at a boutique company in Lagos in 2025 and felt stuck as many of her friends and colleagues were relocating abroad and sharing pictures of their new lives.
Determined to travel, she approached a travel agent who quoted ₦10 million for the relocation process, an amount she could not afford. She then decided to handle the visa process herself and used her ₦500,000 savings to apply, successfully securing a six-month visa on her first attempt.
Encouraged by the success, she intensified her efforts by selling her late father’s land for ₦5 million, borrowing money from more than a dozen people, and selling almost everything she owned, including her television, generator, wardrobe, and bed. At some point, she reportedly slept on clothes spread on the floor.
As the visa was close to expiring and she had not raised enough money, she became desperate. She secretly sublet her apartment for ₦700,000, bought flight tickets worth ₦1.9 million, and sent ₦2 million to a contact abroad who promised to arrange accommodation.
After spending nearly all her funds, she was left with only ₦120,000 in her account.
Her siblings escorted her to the airport, where they took photos and videos to celebrate her relocation, believing she was about to start a new life.
However, after two layovers and arrival at her destination, immigration officers reportedly became suspicious because her visa had only a few days left and she was carrying three large bags while claiming she came for a two-day vacation.
Following several hours of questioning and a night in an airport detention room, immigration officials handed her deportation documents the next morning and informed her that she would be returned to Nigeria immediately.
Less than 24 hours after landing, she was placed on a return flight to Nigeria, leaving her with no house, no belongings, and millions of naira in debt.
The story has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy for her situation while also warning others about the risks of traveling without proper planning and documentation.
