Man Shares Story of Poverty Driving Him Into Bank Marketing Job, Admits to Misusing Customers’ Money

A Nigerian man has shared a shocking and emotional story of how extreme poverty pushed him into desperate actions while working in the marketing department of a bank.

In a personal account, the man revealed that his struggle with poverty forced him to search for any available job, which led him to walk boldly into a bank to request an opportunity in their marketing department.

According to him, he entered the banking hall without knowing anyone and confidently asked to meet a senior staff member.

“I walked into the bank and told the man, ‘Sir, what compensation can you give me if I bring you 30 customers in less than one month?’” he said.

The bank official reportedly directed him to the marketing department, where he explained that he had connections with business people who could open accounts and bring funds to the bank. After the discussion, he was offered a position in the marketing department and immediately joined the team.

After undergoing orientation, he said staff members were warned never to collect money directly from customers, but to only assist them in opening accounts while customers would deposit money at the banking hall themselves.

However, the man admitted that poverty and hunger influenced his decisions.

He narrated that the first customer he opened an account for gave him ₦3,000 to deposit, and hunger made the amount appear much bigger to him.

“In the eyes of hunger, ₦3,000 looked like ₦3 million. My mind left the customer immediately. Hunger finished my reasoning,” he confessed.

He admitted that he began collecting customers’ money and spending it, sometimes directing them to far bank branches to avoid being traced. According to him, the total amount he misused eventually exceeded ₦500,000.

The situation almost exposed him one day when a customer came to the bank to make inquiries about his account.

He explained that he quickly arranged for a colleague to help deposit the money into a temporary account and obtain evidence of payment to avoid suspicion.

“Thank God the staff helped me to pay the money and get a dummy slip. They didn’t even check that the payment was done that same day,” he said.

He further revealed that while working in the loan marketing unit, he met a customer at a government ministry and ended up criticizing the bank’s policies out of frustration, unknowingly damaging the bank’s reputation during his presentation.

The man admitted that before he realized what was happening, he had already spoken negatively about the bank he was working for.

His story highlights the harsh realities of poverty, unemployment, and financial pressure faced by many young Nigerians, while also raising concerns about ethics and integrity in financial institutions.
