Woman Opens Up About Struggle With Drug Abuse, Says She Chose to Keep Living Despite Hardships

A Nigerian woman identified as Sarah has shared her personal struggle with drug abuse, depression, and difficult life experiences, revealing how she once faced a painful decision between ending her life and choosing to keep going.

Speaking about her experience, Sarah said she first experimented with drugs in 2012 out of curiosity. According to her, no one forced her into it, but she later developed a dependency.

“I founded my habit. I wasn’t pushed into it. I just wanted to know what it was like,” she said.

Sarah, who is from Edo State, said she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from National Open University of Nigeria.

She explained that at one point in her life she was the breadwinner of her family, but her situation worsened after she overdosed on drugs, an incident she said nearly cost her life. The experience reportedly made her stay away from drugs for several years.

However, she said she relapsed in 2022 due to several personal challenges, including family problems and emotional distress.

According to Sarah, complications from a pregnancy also took a heavy toll on her. She revealed that she lost a fallopian tube after experiencing severe bleeding and has undergone about seven surgeries.

She also spoke about a relationship that ended during the difficult period. Her former partner, she said, eventually left the country and returned to Turkey.

Sarah said feelings of frustration and depression later pushed her back toward drug use. She noted that she often spends time in Shitta area, Surulere, describing it as a place where she sometimes seeks refuge during emotional struggles.

She also emphasized the influence of social circles, saying the people someone surrounds themselves with can greatly affect their choices.

“I believe the people around you matter a lot. The wrong crowd can easily push you away from your destiny,” she said.

Despite her struggles, Sarah said she once worked as a makeup artist and had attended advanced training courses in cities such as Dubai and Marrakesh, where she improved her professional skills and trained other makeup artists.

Reflecting on her experiences, she warned about the dangers of drug abuse, describing it as something that can gradually destroy a person’s life.

“Drug abuse is dangerous. There are things worse than death,” she said.

Sarah added that she takes responsibility for her past decisions but still hopes to find peace and rebuild her life.
