News Update
THE National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has declared that no woman should lose her life due to inability to pay for treatment during pregnancy-related emergencies.
NHIA’s director-general, Kelechi Ohiri, said this on Friday in Abuja, emphasising that financial barriers must never delay life-saving maternal healthcare.
He spoke about a federal government intervention programme that provides financial protection for women facing life-threatening complications during pregnancy or childbirth.
The initiative allows women who arrive at hospitals with pregnancy complications to receive immediate treatment without making upfront payments.
“What we are essentially saying is that when a woman has a complication in pregnancy and goes to the hospital, money should not be the problem,” Ohiri said.
