Teacher Forced to Kneel Down, Apologize to 8-Year-Old Pupil After Disciplinary Action

A teacher has shared a troubling experience from her time in the classroom, recounting how she was compelled to kneel and apologize to the family of an eight-year-old pupil after disciplining him for failing to complete his school assignments.

In a video circulating on social media, the educator explained that the incident occurred while she was teaching Grade Three at a private school, while the boy involved was a pupil in Grade Four.

According to her account, the boy’s parents had repeatedly complained to the school that their son was struggling academically. As a result, his class teacher reportedly started paying closer attention to him in an effort to help improve his performance.

Before a mid-term break, the teacher gave the class homework assignments to practice during the one-week holiday. However, when school resumed, the boy allegedly returned without completing any of the tasks.

“The boy did not even open his bag throughout the one-week break,” she said.

Frustrated by the situation and concerned about the pupil’s academic progress, the teacher said she intervened and disciplined the boy with a ruler. She stressed that no physical injury was inflicted during the punishment.

Later that day, however, she said she received a call warning that the child’s family intended to report the incident to human rights authorities unless she came to apologize.

“I was told that if I did not come and apologize, they were going to report me to human rights and have me arrested,” she recalled.

The teacher said she subsequently went to the boy’s home accompanied by two of her supervisors, where they apologized to the child’s grandmother in an attempt to settle the matter.

According to her, the situation escalated as family members expressed anger over the disciplinary action.

“We all knelt down and begged the grandmother. One man there even said if he had come to the school the next day, he would have given me a dirty slap,” she said.

She also alleged that the grandmother threatened her that she would not succeed as a teacher in Lagos State and threatened to ensure she would not be employed in any school in the state.

During the apology, the teacher said the pupil at the center of the dispute appeared amused by the situation.

“He was just there laughing while we were kneeling down and apologizing,” she said.

Reflecting on the incident, the teacher described it as one of the many difficult experiences educators face, especially amid growing scrutiny over corporal punishment in schools.

She concluded by advising fellow teachers to exercise caution when disciplining pupils, warning that such actions could lead to serious repercussions.

“If they say don’t beat, please don’t beat,” she said. “Just be looking, teachers, because the insults that come afterwards can be overwhelming.”
