Nigeria’s political landscape has expanded with the registration of two additional political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), bringing the total number of registered political parties in the country to 21.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced this at the commission’s first regular consultative meeting with political parties held in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, the newly registered parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He said both parties satisfied the constitutional and legal requirements for registration after a comprehensive assessment of their applications.

Professor Amupitan explained that the consultative meeting was aimed at strengthening collaboration between INEC and political parties, as well as enhancing transparency in the management of Nigeria’s electoral process.

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to fairness, professionalism, and adherence to the rule of law in the discharge of its responsibilities, urging political parties to uphold internal democracy and contribute to peaceful electoral contests.

The INEC chairman also encouraged political actors to engage constructively with the commission, noting that credible elections require the collective effort of all stakeholders.

Representatives of political parties at the meeting welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step towards deepening democratic participation and broadening political choices for Nigerians.
