Tragedy struck in parts of Oyo State as the Oyo State Fire Service recovered the bodies of two men from separate wells in Ogbomoso and Saki, with one of the victims reportedly losing his life while attempting to rescue a goat.
The incidents were confirmed on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reforms and Chairman of the state Fire Service, Moroof Akinwande, in a statement issued in Ibadan.
Akinwande disclosed that one of the victims, identified as 30-year-old Shina Adedeji, fell into a well at the Aaje Ikose area of Ogbomoso in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area on Tuesday morning.
He explained that fire service operatives were alerted to the incident at about 9:45am and promptly mobilised to the scene, where Adedeji was recovered from the well.
According to him, the deceased was trapped inside the well, which reportedly contained ammonia gas, while attempting to retrieve a fetcher.
In a separate incident, the Fire Service also recovered the body of a man, aged about 45, from a deep well in the Mokola area of Saki, Saki West Local Government Area, on Monday night.
Akinwande said the agency received a distress call at about 10:23pm, following which fire officers, led by Kolade Taiwo, were deployed to the scene.
He stated that the victim had voluntarily entered the well in a bid to rescue a goat but became trapped and could not make it out alive.
The Fire Service chairman cautioned residents against taking unnecessary risks, urging the public to always prioritise personal safety.
He stressed that many such incidents could be avoided if proper precautions were taken, adding that human life remained priceless.
