Osun: Amotekun foils midnight robbery, arrests suspect on Ilesa–Ibadan Expressway

Operatives of the Osun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, have successfully foiled a midnight armed robbery operation along the Ilesa–Ibadan Expressway, delivered scores of travellers and arrested one suspect while others escaped into the bush.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at about 0020hrs, during a routine patrol by operatives of the Amotekun Corps attached to the Ilesa Area Command. The officers swiftly responded after a motorist, Maxwell Phillips from Benue State, who had just been attacked by suspected armed robbers, alerted them to the criminal activity along the expressway.

Acting on the information, the Amotekun patrol team immediately swung into action, disrupting the robbery operation. Upon sighting the Amotekun patrol vehicle, the suspects reportedly fled into the surrounding bush. One of them, Chinedu Eze, a 32-year-old male from Ebonyi State, was apprehended while attempting to escape.

Items recovered from the suspect include a cutlass, a torchlight, and a locally designed wooden gun fashioned to resemble an AK-47 rifle, allegedly used to intimidate and terrorise motorists plying the expressway.

During preliminary investigation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime and disclosed that his accomplices fled upon noticing the presence of Amotekun operatives. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Confirming the arrest, the Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, High Chief Dr. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, commended the operatives for their professionalism, vigilance, and swift response in foiling the robbery attempt.
He reiterated the Corps’ commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property across Osun State and urged residents to continue supporting Amotekun by promptly providing credible information on suspicious activities or security breaches within their communities.

“Amotekun Corps in not playing a rivalry function to any security agencies but to compliment efforts and success of our operations depends largely on timely intelligence from the public. We encourage residents to remain vigilant and collaborate with Amotekun and other security agencies to keep Osun State safe,” the Commander said.
