US delivers military supplies to Nigeria

News Update

THE United States has delivered military supplies to Nigerian security agencies in Abuja to support ongoing operations against terrorism and violent crime, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said on Tuesday.

In a post on X, AFRICOM said, “U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership.”

The delivery comes as both countries deepen security cooperation.

The Federal Government has said Washington has pledged enhanced intelligence sharing, defence equipment and other support to help Nigeria tackle terrorist and extremist groups.

In November, Nigeria sent a high-level delegation to Washington, led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, to strengthen security ties.

The team included the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiandeye; and Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the talks helped address international concerns and align both countries on a joint approach to security.

“The discussions provided ample opportunity to correct misconceptions about Nigeria, reinforced mutual trust, and advanced a coordinated approach to protecting vulnerable communities, especially in the Middle Belt,” Onanuga said.

He added that Nigeria and the United States agreed to set up a Joint Working Group and a non-binding cooperation framework to guide future security and humanitarian support.
