Kwankwaso changes course, backs Governor Yusuf’s defection to APC

News Update

Mr Kwankwaso in short video clip posted by his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, on Tuesday, announced a full endorsement of his party members’ decision to defect to the opposition, a move that has sent shockwaves through the state.

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has thrown his weight behind the planned defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and top members of the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress.

As reported by Vanguard, Kwankwaso, who leads the NNPP, confirmed his new stance in a brief video circulating on Facebook on Tuesday, shared by his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan.

The move has jolted Kano’s political establishment, considering his earlier strong resistance to the defection plot.

The former minister had recently accused Yusuf and other NNPP office holders of reneging on the mandate bestowed on them by voters, insisting the party structure must remain intact.

But speaking on Tuesday, the NNPP leader said he reconsidered his position to allow members exercise their political freedom and to stem rising friction within the party in the state.

Observers said Kwankwaso’s retreat underscores unfolding realignments, with the politician choosing to ride with shifting loyalties rather than risk being sidelined in Kano’s evolving power structure.
