Two dead, Nine Injured As Shooting Disrupts Exams at US Varsity

A shooting at Brown University, an Ivy League school in Rhode Island, United States, has left two people dead and nine others injured.

The gunman opened fire as students sat to take an examination on Saturday evening.

In a statement, the university said six students remain in critical but stable condition.

Exams scheduled for Sunday were cancelled, while non-emergency staff who had overnight shifts were asked to skip work.

Christina Paxson, university president, described the shooting as an “unimaginably tragic day”.

Students in parts of the campus were asked to shelter in place until police can escort them out of the area.

Surveillance video released by police showed a man investigators believe is the suspected shooter briskly leaving the building.

The suspect, who was wearing dark clothing and estimated to be in his 30s, is still at large.

Law enforcement officers are evacuating people in the area, and residents have been told to stay inside.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) launched a tip site for the public to submit photo and video evidence they may have of the shooting suspect.

President Donald Trump has described the incident as “a terrible thing”.

“All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt,” he said.

The attack on the campus brings the number of mass shootings in the US to 389 for this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA).
