The timely intervention of the Kwara State Fire Service saved the Ipata Oloje Market in Ilorin from a major fire disaster on Monday.
The incident, which occurred at about 20:05 hours, specifically affected the mechanic workshops within the market, comprising about 178 shops, according to the spokesman of the State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle.
He revealed that preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was ignited by an unknown person who set refuse on fire.
The flames quickly spread, igniting nearby combustible materials and escalating into the outbreak.
The timely intervention of the State Fire Service, however, curtailed the spread of the fire and prevented further damage to the shops and adjoining structures within the market.
The Director of the State Fire Service strongly warned against the reckless burning of refuse in and around markets, as such negligent acts pose severe risks to lives and properties.
He advised members of the public to always adopt safer waste disposal practices.
