BREAKING: Doctors begin strike at LASUTH, patients left stranded

Patients and their families were left stranded on Monday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) after doctors working under the Lagos State Government began a three-day warning strike.

The strike started at 8:00 a.m. and was organized by the Medical Guild. The doctors are protesting what they called “illegal and unfair salary deductions” made by the Lagos State Treasury Office.

According to Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, the Chairman of the Medical Guild, the deductions started in April 2025 when the government reduced doctors’ salaries without warning.

Although those deductions were later reversed after negotiations, another round of deductions happened in July, breaking an earlier agreement between the doctors and the government.

“Our members were very upset. Many wanted to strike immediately, but we first tried to resolve things through dialogue,” Dr. Olugbogi said.

A six-member committee was set up to settle the issue, but the Guild said the government’s actions showed a lack of sincerity. This led to the decision to go on strike.

The strike will end at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 31.

Photos from the hospital show patients and their families waiting helplessly, with many unable to receive medical care.
