A family is issuing a warning after their baby lost most of the vision in one eye following a simple kiss that transmitted a rare and serious Herpes Virus infection. The virus, commonly associated with fever blisters on the lips, can cause severe complications when it infects the eye.
The family said their child, then just over a year old, first developed what appeared to be a routine eye infection. Within days, they noticed a lesion forming on the eye and realized the child had lost sensation in the affected area.
Doctors confirmed the baby had contracted Herpes Virus in his left eye, causing a four-millimeter open wound in the cornea. Specialists warned that the infection could have spread to the brain if left untreated and noted that the virus cannot be cured, only managed.
The family spent thousands of dollars on medications, hospital visits, specialist consultations, and international medical advice. Despite these efforts, the virus flared up again, leaving the baby with ongoing infections and partial loss of vision in the affected eye.
According to the parents, the child underwent the first of three surgeries in South Africa aimed at saving the eye. Future procedures include harvesting nerves from the leg and a possible cornea transplant if a suitable donor can be found. Doctors say it is uncertain whether vision can be fully restored, but saving the eye itself is the top priority.
