News Update
THE ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is ramping up efforts to secure President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 by wooing governors from opposition parties with attractive political offers.
According to PUNCH, governors and political figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are reportedly being promised different benefits.
These offers include ministerial positions for former governors, return tickets for current governors to seek re-election, and the right for governors to choose their successors.
Notably, Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, who has publicly endorsed Tinubu, is expected to officially defect to APC soon.
Delta’s Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, have already made the switch.
Anambra’s Charles Soludo and others are also backing Tinubu.
In Adamawa, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri was offered a key role in 2027 and the power to produce his successor in a closed-door meeting with NSA Nuhu Ribadu.
Similar offers have been made to other opposition governors.
The wave of defections has strengthened APC’s grip on the National Assembly, with 38 lawmakers—eight senators and 30 House members—switching allegiance since July 2023.
In response, Atiku warned that supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid is a betrayal of Nigerians.
He urged opposition leaders to reject what he called a “one-party state” and unite under a new coalition to rescue Nigeria from hardship, poverty, and insecurity.

The PDP’s Debo Ologunagba echoed Atiku’s stance, calling the defections a threat to democracy and declaring that Tinubu would face a united electorate in 2027.
