2027: INEC Puts Preliminary Voters’ Register Online After Public Complaints

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made the preliminary register of voters for the 2027 general elections available online following concerns from Nigerians and other stakeholders about access to the list.

The commission announced the decision Monday in a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee.

INEC said the online publication would make the register more accessible to the public, complementing the physical display conducted nationwide from Oct. 9 to 15.

“Accordingly, and in furtherance of its commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process, the Commission has decided to make available on its online platform the same Preliminary Register of Voters earlier displayed at the Registration Areas,” the statement said.

The register can be accessed at https://display.inecnigeria.org.

The physical exercise was conducted under Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2026 to allow registered voters to inspect their details and submit claims or objections where necessary.

“This additional measure complements the physical display already undertaken and is intended to facilitate wider public access to the Register,” INEC said.

The commission added that it was still processing claims and objections arising from the exercise ahead of the certification and publication of the final register on December 15.

INEC’s decision follows reports that it failed to publish the preliminary register online within the period required by law, despite conducting the physical display.

The delay raised questions about compliance with the Electoral Act and public access to the electoral process.

The preliminary register allows voters to check whether their names and other details have been correctly recorded before the list is finalised.

INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, saying it would faithfully implement the Electoral Act 2026 in delivering credible elections.
