News Update
THE Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has denied allegations making the rounds that its operatives were responsible for the shooting of a masquerade follower during a cultural festival held in Ikirun, Osun State.
The incident, described as unfortunate, occurred during the celebration of the annual masquerade festival, where Amotekun operatives were officially invited to provide security and ensure peace and order throughout the event.
Contrary to the circulating reports, the Corps said no Amotekun personnel, either intentionally or mistakenly, fired at anyone.
Clarifying the situation in a statement, the Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Chief (Dr) Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, explained that while carrying out their duties at the event, some hoodlums launched an unprovoked attack on one of the Corps operatives.
During the struggle to disarm the officer, one of the assailants reportedly pulled the trigger, discharging a bullet from the firearm. Sadly, the bullet struck an innocent bystander, who was identified as a follower of the masquerade.
The attackers, after perpetrating the act, fled the scene without succeeding in seizing the weapon. The Amotekun Corps immediately reported the incident to the Nigeria Police Force, and both agencies have since commenced joint efforts to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.
The Osun Amotekun Corps reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
The Corps urged members of the public to disregard misleading reports alleging that its operatives were responsible for the shooting, describing such claims as baseless and not reflective of the facts.
It also called on media organisations and the public to verify sensitive information before dissemination, so as not to incite panic or mistrust.
Amotekun reaffirmed its dedication to transparency, professionalism, and the safety of all residents and visitors in Osun State.
