As part of activities marking the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration, themed “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” the Osun State Ministry of Health and the State Primary Health Care Development Board, in collaboration with MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices, The Challenge Initiative, and ECWES, took a sensitization campaign on reproductive health and women’s empowerment to Igbona Market.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Health, the State Coordinator for Family Planning, Mrs. Ololade Abatan, educated market women on the importance of family planning and childbirth spacing. She emphasized that family planning enables women to complete their education, participate in the workforce, contribute meaningfully to society, and properly care for their husband and children while maintaining their own well-being.

Mrs. Abatan further explained that family planning allows couples and individuals to decide the number of children they want and when to have them. She urged market women to visit public health facilities, where trained professionals can provide proper guidance on contraceptive methods instead of purchasing pills indiscriminately from the market. According to her, healthcare providers can help women to make an informed choice and a suitable contraceptive methods for their bodies.

Also speaking at the sensitization program, the Adolescent Desk Officer, Mrs. Roseline Akinlabi, highlighted the importance of child spacing.

She stressed that proper spacing between births allows women to recover from the stress of pregnancy and labor, provide sound education for their children, and better care for their families.
