Osun Govt, APC trade word over LG secretariats takeover

News Update

THE Osun State Government has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its members of perpetrating violence in local government secretariats across the state.

The state government made this accusation during a live radio broadcast on Rave FM, Uniq FM, and the state-owned LivingSpring FM, on Monday morning in Osogbo.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, revealed that miscreants in the service of APC had attacked the Ilesa East, Ifelodun, Odo-Otin, Osogbo West local council, and Osogbo Local Government secretariats.

He said: “We can now confirm that the APC and their thugs have entered several local government secretariats in the state. They have started looting from these secretariats.

“They are in Ilesa East, Ifelodun, and Odo-Otin local governments. They have entered the secretariats and started looting. The people have risen to resist them. We must let the whole world know.

“Also, the whole world should know that, as we speak, the election scheduled for Saturday, 22 February 2025, will proceed as planned.”

He urged the public not to engage in violence with the alleged looters but instead to collect video evidence that could be used against them later.

However, refuting the allegations, a member of APC, Waheed Adekunle, said the claims were untrue.

Adekunle stated APC members were indeed at the Secretariats but only to enforce the Appeal Court judgment of Monday, 10 February 2025.

He said: “All the state government and the Peoples Democratic Party are doing is whipping up sentiments and inflaming tensions in the state.

“We are at the secretariats to enforce the court’s judgment, which is legal, and we are carrying this out with the full cooperation of security agencies, including the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.”

Additionally, it was gathered that, contrary to Alimi’s allegations, APC members and elected council officials had gathered at the secretariats but could not gain access due to an earlier directive from the Osun Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE. On Sunday, these unions instructed their members to withdraw their services from local government secretariats across the state, citing safety concerns.

In separate statements issued on Sunday, the unions explained that they had asked members to stay away from the council headquarters for their own safety.

Also, on Sunday, the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, during a press conference, accused the state APC and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, of planning to initiate a forceful takeover of local government secretariats.

Governor Adeleke called on President Bola Tinubu to rein in Oyetola and urged security agencies to intervene to prevent unnecessary violence.

In response, APC, during a separate press conference, urged Governor Adeleke to accept the judgment of the Appeal Court.

The party also criticised him for disparaging the President and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
