Stop using IG’s name for fraudulent purposes – FPRO cautions officers

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its stance against the misuse of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, by unprofessional officers in fraudulent activities.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, expressed concern over the conduct of these officers, whose actions he said continue to tarnish the reputation of the force and undermine public trust.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Police Force is concerned about the persistent unprofessional conduct of a few police officers, which undermines the standards and reputation of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary actions taken against those who have been exposed, some officers are still engaging in these shameful acts that erode public trust.

“Even more alarming is the fraudulent use of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police to perpetrate these illegal acts.”

Adejobi further disclosed that the intention behind this tactic was to intimidate victims into believing that the IG is aware, and approves of their illegal activities.

“As a result, victims are often deterred from reporting these incidents to higher authorities,” he wrote.

The FPRO urged the public to be vigilant and report any instances of misconduct or fraudulent behaviour by police officers to the appropriate authorities, including the heads of the Complaint Response Units in their states or the Commissioner of Police.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to exercise caution when approached by officers or individuals claiming connections with the IGP or any senior officer for the purpose of influence or favour,” he added.

This fresh warning comes after a similar alert issued by the Nigeria Police Force in October, urging Nigerians to refrain from exploiting the name or office of the IGP to intimidate others.
