Chairman, Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Barrister Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, has disclosed that poor funding and inadequate infrastructure are the major problems hindering educational development in the country.
Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made these assertions while delivering the 18th Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso Alumni annual lecture.
According to report, the event was held at the institution on Thursday.
Alli, while delivering the lecture titled “Revamping Nigeria’s Education: Addressing Challenges, Alumni Contributions, and Funding Strategies,” emphasized the urgent need for a collaborative approach to reform Nigeria’s education sector.
He used the opportunity to call on alumni, government, and private sector partners to play active roles in addressing the challenges facing the sector.
The lawmaker, who described education as the cornerstone of national development, regretted that the sector is battling with an array of problems in order to survive.
Alli, while speaking further, maintained that infrastructural shortcomings are affecting many schools in the country.
He added that many schools, especially those in rural areas, lack essentials such as classrooms, libraries, and laboratories.
He concluded by saying that to transform the sector, a united effort among the government, private sector, and alumni is needed.
“Our education system is the cornerstone of national development, yet significant hurdles hold it back. Underfunding and inadequate infrastructure are key barriers to educational growth.
“Without adequate funding, particularly in rural schools, the quality of learning environments is compromised. This funding gap greatly impacts public institutions’ ability to offer quality education.
“Alumni have the power to be change agents, supporting scholarships, mentorship, and improving the educational landscape.”
