Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has issued a directive to immediately suspend all non-statutory deductions from civil servants’ salaries, particularly those linked to cooperative associations and commodity vendors.
The move comes in response to a wave of complaints from workers regarding unauthorised deductions made through the state payroll system.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, confirmed the decision in a statement released in Gusau on Wednesday.
The statement read: “In his effort to sanitise the Zamfara State payroll system for more efficient management of civil servants’ remunerations, which has been inundated with numerous unauthorised and illegal deductions, Governor Dauda Lawal has ordered an immediate halt to all non-statutory deductions from workers’ salaries.”
Governor Lawal’s directive includes halting deductions used for an illegal surcharge of workers under the guise of cooperatives and commodity loan repayments.
The governor has instructed the Commissioner for Finance to enforce the suspension and communicate it to all relevant cooperative societies and commodity vendors.
“The decision follows numerous complaints about deductions from workers’ salaries, some of which were used to facilitate an illegal surcharge in the name of cooperatives and commodity loan repayments.
“Governor Lawal has instructed the Commissioner for Finance to stop all such deductions from workers’ salaries and to relay the same information to all cooperative societies and commodity vendors,” the statement added.
Idris clarified that only statutory deductions are permitted under the new directive, including PAYE, union dues, NHF, ZAMCHEMA, water rates, FMB’s Rent-to-Own and Home Renovation schemes, and Housing Corp loans.
The statement further emphasised the administration’s commitment to supporting the welfare of civil servants.
“The present administration in Zamfara State is committed to implementing measures that support the welfare and development of civil servants. These include enhancing working conditions, providing necessary resources, and creating a conducive environment to ensure a highly competent, motivated, and productive workforce,” the statement said.
