Woman Wanted in Nigeria for Same-Sex Relationship

News Update

A Nigerian woman has reportedly been declared wanted in her community after allegations of a same-sex relationship surfaced, sparking outrage and condemnation. The development has led to growing tension and threats from both law enforcement and local residents.

The woman, identified only as Mrs Victoria Owoeye, is said to have relocated to Canada with her husband, Mr Ademola Owoeye, and their two children in 2023 for studies. While she pursued her education abroad, her longtime associate and sex partner, simply identified as Ms Kehinde, managed the family’s company in Nigeria.

Trouble began in June 2024 when Ms Kehinde was arrested after a dispute with her female partner drew police attention. During questioning, suspicions about her past relationship with Mrs Victoria Owoeye surfaced, fueling community anger and hostility. Local youths reportedly vandalised the family house of Owoeye in Lagos, Nigeria. Their office, vehicles and other properties were vandalised, accusing Victoria of “destroying societal values.”

Mr Ademola Owoeye (Spouse), who returned to Nigeria in October 2024, was allegedly threatened with arrest for “aiding and abetting” his wife. He has also been pressured by both community members and authorities to produce Victoria to face prosecution under Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2013, which criminalises same-sex relationships and prescribes up to 14 years imprisonment.
