Academic activities at Western Delta University, Oghara, in Delta State, were momentarily disrupted on Thursday following the invasion of suspected armed robbers into the university campus.
Â
Voice Air Media learnt that the hoodlums gained entry through an unfenced perimeter at the rear of the campus, intending to rob students.
Â
Students, upon sensing danger, quickly raised the alarm and sought safety in nearby areas.
Â
The timely intervention by the law enforcement agents reportedly prevented any casualties or serious disruption to the university’s operations as the invaders were said to have fled in different directions at sighting the security operatives.
Â
When contacted by our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.
Â
He said, “They (the suspected robbers) entered through the broken fence at the back of the school, but the police responded swiftly and they fled.”
Â
Also commenting, a student leader in the University, Simeon Okpoko, stated that “the incident underscores ongoing security challenges facing educational institutions and highlights the importance of vigilant security measures to safeguard students and staff alike”.
Â
Meanwhile, the management of the University is now putting up increased security measures to prevent future incidents and maintain the safety of the university community.
