JUST IN: Reps seek establishment of medical center in Wamba

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed for second reading a Bill seeking the establishment of Federal Medical Centre, Sisinbaki Wamba in Nasarawa State.

The Bill sponsored by Hon. Jeremiah Umaru is titled: A Bill for Act to Amend Federal Medical Centres Act to provide for the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Sisinbaki Wamba Nasarawa State and for Related Matters HB 709.

Leading debate on the Bill, Hon Umaru said the establishment of FMC in Sisinbaki, Wamba, Nasarawa State, holds significant importance for several reasons, considering the distance between Wamba to Keffi and Lafia for medical attention in emergency situations.

He said establishing the centre will help in improved healthcare access especially in the areas specialised medical services and facilities that may not be readily available in other healthcare facilities in the area.

“This helps in improving healthcare access for the residents of Sisinbaki, Wamba, Farin Ruwa, Akwanga, Nasarawa Eggon, some parts of Plateau State and Sanga Local government area of Kaduna State”, he said.

He said the The Federal Medical Centre when equipped with modern medical equipment and staffed with qualified healthcare professionals, will ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services to the local communities and reduce the rate of medical tourism abroad.

Hon Umaru also said that the FMC when established will offer specialised medical care, advanced treatment options, and diagnostic services that cater to a wide range of healthcare needs, including surgeries, maternity care, emergency services, and more.

He told the House that the establishment of the FMC will contribute to the development of healthcare infrastructure in the region, which he noted, is essential for addressing the healthcare needs of the growing population.

The lawmaker also said that presence of a Federal Medical Centre in the area can contribute to economic development in the region by creating jobs opportunities, attracting healthcare professionals and stmulating growth in related industries.

He said FMC plays a crucial role in promoting public health, disease prevention and health education initiatives in the community, leading to improved health outcomes and well-being, adding that the people stand to harness the aforementioned benefits when established.
