Nigerian Police ban POS, other electronic mobile money usage in stations nationwide

In a move to curb alleged illegal and illicit transactions, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has banned the use of Point of Sale (POS) machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police stations and facilities across Nigeria.

The announcement was made by Police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who stated that the decision followed public outcry over purported corrupt practices involving POS machine operators and certain police operatives.

Adejobi emphasized that the ban aims to uphold the integrity and security of police operations, prevent corruption, and maintain discipline within the Force.

The directive applies to all police officers, and any attempt to flout it will result in severe sanctions on the leadership of the affected commands and formations.

Despite previous directives, some Commands and Formations were found to be disregarding the regulation.

The IGP highlighted the risks associated with the use of electronic payment devices within police facilities, including potential compromises of sensitive information and financial irregularities.

The IGP urged strict adherence to the directive, emphasizing that non-compliance is non-negotiable.

He warned that any police officer or POS operator found contravening the order or engaging in illicit financial transactions will face disciplinary and criminal action in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

The Command/Formation leadership will also be held responsible for any violations.

The move underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining transparency, accountability, and discipline within its ranks while addressing concerns about the potential misuse of financial technology within law enforcement agencies.
