JUST IN: AIG warns policemen against corruption, others

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 16 Headquarters, Yenagoa, AIG Paul Odama, has warned officers and men of the Bayelsa State Police Command against engaging in extortion, bribery and corruption as well as other acts of unprofessional conduct.

Giving the warning while addressing officers and men during a familiarisation tour of the state command at its headquarters in Yenagoa, the state capital, on Tuesday, Odama said that there would be no bribery and corruption if the police performed their duties.

He said, “Then, there is a problem of extortion. If the police were doing their job there would be no bribery and corruption in Nigeria, because that is our mandate. We have the right to arrest, we have the right to apprehend, detect, to prosecute.

“If the police are doing their job, there will be no problem of corruption in Nigeria. And before we can arrest anybody who is corrupt, we must also have to clean ourselves because he who goes to equity must go with clean hands. So we must be mindful of that. I know your CP has been talking to you about it, and the top management team has zero tolerance for corruption. Make sure you take care of yourselves.”

Speaking to other acts of indiscipline, Odama advised the policemen at the command to shun drunkenness, drinking and sleeping while on duty because hoodlums could take advantage of their unguardedness and snatch guns from them.

“There are many consequences. Any police officer who improperly conducts himself will be disciplined. It ranges from reprimand, even to dismissal. So there are consequences for any police officer that disregards any disciplinary measures”, Odama warned.

He assured them that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was working hard to improve the welfare of policemen, noting that salary payments had become regular in recent times.

The AIG, who supervises Bayelsa and Rivers States, urged them to protect themselves and be alert at all times while promoting unity and esprit de corps, especially with other security agents.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Alonyenu Idu, said that AIG Odama’s tour had boosted the morale of the officers and men in the task of enforcing social harmony, particularly in this period of Yuletide.

He said men of the command were available for law and order management duties without complaint despite the challenging environment in which they were operating.

“The operational environment within this domain is very unique and challenging. Bayelsa State Command is still squatting in a defunct party secretariat, and this has constrained the smooth administrative running and operational deployment of the men”, Idu lamented.
