Commissioner: NPC sworn oath of secrecy to protect Nigerians’ census details

THE National Population Commission (NPC) says the personal information of Nigerians obtained during the 2023 census will be strictly handled in confidence.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Bala Almu-Banye, federal commissioner representing Katsina state, said the staff of the commission had sworn not to disclose citizen’s details.

He said all the enumerators and supervisors will also take an oath before embarking on the exercise.

He said the commission had recruited adequate ad hoc staff for effective coverage, adding that the personnel will work in their individual LGAs to achieve the set targets.

He encouraged residents of communities to cooperate with the enumerators and provide the necessary details.

“The information will be treated as confidential and only for the purpose of the exercise,” he said.

“We were all sworn not to reveal people’s secrets, likewise, all the enumerators and supervisors will take oath before they start the exercise.”

He said the information would be digitally transmitted to the commission’s server through the personal digital assistant (PDA) – a machine like a mobile phone.

He said the NPC would work with traditional and community leaders to ensure that people living in hard-to-reach areas were counted.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to announce new dates for the national population and housing census that was postponed last April. ⁣

The census was postponed by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
