Flood kills 10, destroys 200 houses in Buhari’s home state

TEN persons were reportedly killed and over 200 houses destroyed in Katsina and Bindawa LGA of Katsina State after downpour overwhelmed buildings and roads in neighbourhoods causing havoc.

Residents say heavy rain started at about 4pm on Tuesday and lasted till late night with Ungwan Sabuwa, along Kofar Kaura axis, worst-hit by the downpour in Katsina metropolis.

People continued evacuating their belongings from submerged buildings.

A resident of the area, Yunusa Suleman Rico, said the 10 dead victims include an infant baby whose remain is yet to be found.

According to Rico, the disaster was as a result of poor drainages in the affected neighbourhood, denying an exit channel for the downpour gushing from Kofar Kwaya and Kofar Kaura axis.

Similarly, in Bindawa where over 200 houses were destroyed, residents have been forced to seeking refuge in neighbouring communities.

Confirming the disaster, Chief Press Secretary to Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda said only two deaths have so far been officially reported.
