A non-governmental organization in Osun State, World Institute for Peace, has berated Governor Ademola Adeleke over continuous use of security agents to barricade palaces of some monarchs in the State.
The organization in a statement by its Executive Director, Lamina Kamilideen Omotoyosi observed that the continuous shutting of Palaces via executive order by the governor when cases are in court is “a misplacement of duty”.
“We observed that after Gov. Adeleke attained the mantle of power in the state, he went on a spree in exiting the kings that the immediate past Governor of the state, Alh. Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola installed from their palaces.” Lamina said.
“We cited the cases of traditional monarchs which are still in courts regarding their right to the thrones and the inter-family kingship tussle before Gov. Adeleke interfered with the step-aside order. This action of the Governor can only be described as misplacement of duty. While instead of appealing to the aggrieved parties in the affected communities to allow court processes and beef up security apparatus in the areas and give warning to anyone who may want to cause trouble, the governor displayed the executive power in the manner that his action can only be described as a display sentiment.
“It is quite unfortunate that even where there is no rancour about installation of King, the governor asked the already installed King not to enter palace, this is indeed a misplacement of priority.”
WIP said former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s tenure lasted until November 26, 2022, stating that actions taken after July 16 elections can not be deemed illegal.
“We learnt that part of the claims by Gov. Jackson Adeleke is that, the former governor installed the King after July 16th election. But it is very necessary for the governor to learn more about how many months and how many years makes a tenure for a governor and when exactly is a governor who lost reelection for second term in office expected to drop his or her executive power within the confine of Nigeria constitution. We believe Gov. Adeleke did not aware that his own first term tenure as the incumbent governor of Osun state will come to an end on the 27th of November 2026. He should simply knows that those kings were installed within the context of the constitutional right of the former governor. He should stop playing politics with Yoruba tradition.
“Legally”, “it is not within the ambiance of the executive arm of government, to unstay a king from the throne. By design, it’s the function of the judiciary to resolve such issue.” in the context of the Obaship Tussle in Osun, governor need to allow judiciary to complete it’s steps which Supreme Court is the last stage of the process and that is when he, as a governor can exercise his executive power because the cases are already going on in various courts before he came to power.
“The governor should allow for the reinstating of the monarchs concerned. Be it as it may, it’s highly ridiculous for the government of Osun State, the cradle of Yoruba land, to interface with the construct of its traditional rulers.” what a shame!
In a true identity, “the governor is bias in his conduct. His Royal Majesty, the Timi of Ede, the governor’s hometown, Oba Munirudeen Lawal which just celebrated his fifteen years anniversary, still has a court case like the affected traditional rulers, why did he not suffer the same fate.”
“Likewise, the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji still has a court case why wasn’t he ruffled out of his palace ? It’s must have been because the king supported Adeleke during his quest for governance.” which is known to the world.
“Gov. Adeleke is not a student of history,” “when his brother, Isiaka Adeleke became the governor of Osun State in 1991, he didn’t dismiss the Kings that were not in his support during his electioneering campaign. So also did Chief Bisi Akande, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and Adegboyega Oyetola.”
