Food insecurity deepens in Nigeria even with UN support

United Nations humanitarian aid totaling $28.5m has been provided to the nation to combat food insecurity and malnutrition.

Despite the funding, more than 19.5 million people in Nigeria are already facing severe food insecurity due to the high inflation rates, amongst other factors.

The funds, released through the Central Emergency Response Fund and the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund, were meant to provide emergency funding for people in need through rapid allocations to new and deteriorating crises.

The amount was revealed in a recent report released by the organization and obtained by our correspondent.

A breakdown of the report showed that in May and September 2022, the organization released $10m and $15m respectively to support food security and nutrition response in northeastern Nigeria.

Also, in September, the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund provided two allocations of $2.5m and $1m to enable humanitarian partners to provide urgent nutrition.

However, this funding is apart from the interagency $351 million multisector plan to address the desperate food and nutrition situation.

In a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, it was noted that the food crisis would affect Nigerians in 21 states and FCT, including 416,000 Internally Displaced Persons.
