Spanish FA suspends Lewandowski, Pique after Osasuna encounter

The Spanish FA (RFEF) have announced the punishments for both Robert Lewandowski and Gerard Pique after their red cards against Osasuna back on 8th November.

The Polish striker has been banned for three games while Pique has been hit with a four game suspension.

Robert Lewandowski will miss Barcelona’s next three matches after seeing a red card in the victory over Osasuna just before the World Cup break.

The Pole was sent off in the 30th minute for a second bookable offence and was given a one match suspension for that reason. However, while leaving the field, he touched his nose while pointing at the referee. It is claimed he was upset with referee Gil Manzano’s arrogance, but the referee included this in his match report. The Competition Committee has hit the former Bayern man with a further two game ban for showing “disrespect towards the officials”.

Barcelona appealed the first of his yellow cards as well as the additional two game suspension, but the Competition Committee rejected their appeals.

That means Lewandowski will miss Barca’s next three fixtures with Espanyol, Atletico Madrid and Real Betis.

Gerard Pique was also dismissed at half-time for protesting Lewandowski’s red card.

He has been hit with a four game suspension for “insults, verbal abuse and insulting attitudes”, but he has since retired from football and so will just have to pay a fine of 2400 euros.
