Osun: Adeleke, Oyetola trade blame over campaign billboards

Ahead of July 16th gubernatorial election in Osun state, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Ademola Adeleke and Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the ruling party are trading blame over the destruction of campaign billboards.

A statement yesterday by Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Akindele Adekunle, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of sponsoring violence against the PDP and destroying Adeleke’s billboards across the state.

He said:
“We will not hesitate to mobilise the people against the violence being promoted by the APC. We urge the world to hold the APC responsible for any breakdown of law and order in Osun as we will no longer watch the destruction of our candidate’s billboards or any other attack on our campaign materials go without a response.”

But Governor Oyetola, through his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Sunday Akere, held that PDP is never a threat to the APC victory in the July 16 election.

He said:
“Their candidate is not a threat to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s re-election, so, we are not interested in what he is doing or concerns himself with. They should look inward and resolve their in-fighting to determine where their problem is coming from. For us, we concentrate on ensuring the victory of our candidate at the poll and we will not lose focus by their distractions.”

Also, the loyalists of the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, in ‘The Osun Progressives (TOP)’ caucus, have said they will remain in the All Progressives Congress ahead of the July 16 governorship election.

Caucus Chairman Adelowo Adebiyi, in a statement yesterday, said members of the caucus made the decision during their weekly meeting.

He said:
“We shall stay put in APC. We will not yield a space to fair-weather politicians who currently hold the party by the jugular. We denounce rumours that the caucus is forging a working relationship with different parties ahead of the July 16 governorship election.

“The group disowns any individual or group using its name or that of its Patron, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, to negotiate. The caucus will not stoop to engage in contractual politics. Anybody who is holding discussions with or negotiating with other political parties is doing is at his own risk.”

The group also congratulated Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on his emergence as the APC presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, and felicitated with the party and its national executives for the success of the special convention.
