Sri Lanka Pm resigns, gives reason

Mahindra Rajapaksa Resigned after series of mass protests at the governments handling of the economic crisis

The move came as the Island was placed on curfew after series of brutal collision between Rajapaksa supporters and anti-government protesters in Colombo.

“Minimum of 78 people have been injured in the collision in the capital” a local hospital said.

Mr Rajapaksa 76, via his younger brother president Gotabaya Rajapaksa sent his resignation letter, saying he hopes it would help resolve the crisis, but this might not satisfy the government opponents while the latter remains in power.

Since demonstration flared up in April, protesters have been camped outside president Rajapaksa office, demanding he quit.

Police were deployed earlier in the day after the the two supporters collided outside the prime minister and president’s office in Colombo

Tear gas and water cannon were fired at the supporters by the police after the supporters breached police line

People were furious due to the rise of product and cost of living is becoming unaffordable

Sri Lanka foreign currency reserves have virtually run dry, and it can no longer afford essential items including food, medicine and fuel.

The government blames Covid19, which killed Sri Lanka tourist trade one of its biggest foreign currency earner but many experts says economic mismanagement is to blame.

The prime minister said his resignation was meant to clear the way for an “all party government to guide the country out of the crisis, AFP news agency reports.
