Ekiti 2022: Meet A Governorship Aspirant, Kolapo Olusola-eleka

Professor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka was born fifty three (53) years ago into the family of Elder Joshua Olusola Ojo Eleka and Deaconess Eunice Olusola Ojo Eleka of the Eleka’s family compound in Ikere, Ekiti State.

He had his early basic and secondary school education at St. Matthew’s C.A.C Primary School and Annunciation School, both in Ikere between 1972-1978 and 1978-1983 respectively, throughout which he excelled as the best student academically at every level.

From there, he proceeded to study Building at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife between 1984-1989 during which he emerged as the best graduating student among his peers.

He bagged an M.Sc. degree in Construction Technology from the great University of Lagos in 1993 and a Ph.d (Building Structures) in 2005, the first of his kind in the field of Building Structures from the Department of Building, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-|Ife.

In pursuit of his passion for knowledge, he got employed as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Building, Obafemi Awolowo University on 3rd October 1990 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Building, specializing in Building Structures, on 1st October, 2012.

Professor Olusola’s academic exploit in his twenty-four (24) years of active teaching and research in Building Structures and Construction Materials and Technology, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels have been greatly impactful. His teaching areas include Structural Mechanics and Stress Analysis, Design of Structures, Construction Materials and Technology and Building Construction.

His research interests are in Concrete Technology, Development of alternative, local and sustainable building materials and Building Production Management. His research effort has resulted in publication of sixty one (61) peer-reviewed articles in national and international journals and conference proceedings.

This is in addition to several unpublished seminar and workshop presentations aimed at improving the expertise of professionals within the built environment.

Professor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka is well acknowledged within the academic circles for providing leadership in teaching and research in the field of Building Structures and Construction Technology.

This includes mentoring young and early career academics, supporting them to build and grow their teaching and research capabilities to enable them become high-achieving and high-performing individuals.

To date, Professor Olusola had successfully supervised eighteen (18)postgraduate projects in building, including five (5) Ph.d, and in addition to several undergraduate supervision. Many of his academic mentees are today Senior Lecturers, Associate Professors and Professors, Heads of Department and Chief Executives of various firms and companies.

Professor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka was opportuned to become the Deputy
Governor of Ekiti State between 2014-2018 and the Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party.

Gubernatorial Candidate in the 2018 Election which he narrowly lost to the incumbent Governor.

Under his supervision as Deputy Governor, and bringing in his innovative capabilities, Ekiti State recorded a history-making and record-breaking performance in the NECO SSCE external
examination coming first all over the country in 2016, 2017 and 2018 consecutively. Also, the state recorded a move from 29% rating in 2014 to over 70% rating in 2017 in WASSCE.

Under his supervision, Ekiti State represented Nigeria in an international debate competition in Singapore and was awarded the “Best First-Timer Performance” trophy; just as Ekiti State was equally rated the overall best in Young Nigerian Scientist Presidential Award (out of 774 participating students) in 2017.

In addition, Ekiti State emerged with Best Performance in Junior Engineers, Technologists and Scientists (JETS) in Interstate Quiz Competition in 2017; also, the state won the overall best student performance in 2016 (Science Teachers Association of Nigeria) STAN-organized Science written and quiz competition; overall best in the Southwest ANCOPSS-organized essay competition and attained third position in the National Essay Competition in 2017.

Similarly, Ekiti people have continued to commend this excellent innovator for his Spelling-Bee initiative which returned reading culture and healthy academic competition in schools through the scholarship it offered to the best students and pupils in each category of the competition.

Professor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka is an active corporate member of the Nigerian Institute of Building and a Registered Builder who had served the Institute in the past in several capacities such as Examiner, Vice Chairman (Osun State Chapter), Chairman (Osun State Chapter), Registrar, Research and Development Secretary, Member, NIOB/CORBON Joint Committee and Chairman, Research and Development Committee. Under his leadership as Chairman Osun
State Chapter of NIOB, the State successfully hosted The National Conference of NIOB for the first time in 2008.

Prof Olusola is a trained child evangelist and an ordained pastor in Christ Apostolic Church Worldwide. He stands out in his mentorship roles as the Former National Coordinator of the Christ Apostolic Church Students’ Association (CACSA) Fellowships in Nigerian Higher Institutions.

He is currently a member of the Governing Council of Christ Apostolic Church Students’ Association being the apex body of the group.

His achievements are being attested to
by many young people of the church especially on moral and spiritual development, leadership capacity-building, self-discovery and maximization of good talents; which he successfully achieved as the Osun State Coordinator,1998-2004 and later as the Head, Directorate of Higher Institution, NYSC and TEENS Affairs for 10 years, 2004- 2014.

As a mentor and teacher to students, he is renowned for his teachings on integrity, faithfulness, diligence and so many other aspects of leadership traits and of course the doctrines of faithfulness and loyalty as ways to be effective and productive as future leaders.

As part of noble recognition accorded this prolific son of Ekiti, the following awards have been given to him, which include:
