Players of the Super Eagles of Nigeria have reportedly turned down the match bonus offered to them by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after beating Liberia.
Nigeria won Liberia 2-0 in their first game of the World Cup 2022 qualifiers on Friday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
And right now it is gathered that a row over their match bonus has ensued after the players were told they will receive their payment in Naira as it is part of the new policy of the football body to pay bonuses for home games in Nigeria’s currency.
The sum of one million Naira was said to be the agreed amount as a match bonus for a home win, an amount which the players strongly rejected as there was no meeting for an agreement to the said amount as originally planned.
Leaders of the team were supposed to meet with the NFF to agree on bonuses before the first game but the meeting wasn’t held and it has now led to this impasse.
Nigeria’s senior national team players are demanding 5 million Naira and also full payment of their outstanding allowances before the next round of World Cup qualifiers games in October as the NFF can’t claim to be broke with the recent unveiling of three new sponsors.
How effective the Super Eagles threat will be is left to be seen and hopefully it doesn’t affect their next immediate game against Cape Verde on Tuesday.
