The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has approved Moderna and the Sputnik COVID-19 vaccines for use.
The new vaccines were approved for emergency use in Nigeria.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Moji Adeyeye, made this know at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.
She explained that although the Sputnik vaccine has not yet been approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO), NAFDAC has carried out independent checks on the vaccine and found that the benefits prevail over the risks.
Adeyeye who was represented by the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr Fori Tatama, she vowed that health, safety and environment-based issues were taken seriously by NAFDAC.
Adeyeye said, “The WHO is carrying out an audit of NAFDAC, which will enable the country to start manufacturing vaccines; the programme started on Monday and will last till Friday.”
